Impact on Curriculum
The curricular impact of student centered learning is very prevalent for teachers who choose to use that philosophy. A teacher (or administrator) needs to develop an overall view of what will be included in a course. There will also need to be assessment so the learning goals can be measured. The amount of involvement of the student at different levels of the learning process will vary depending on a variety of factors. The bottom line is teachers should allow students to be as actively involved as is reasonable. This can change between age groups, disciplines, teacher’s personality and a number of other variables. Creating a sense of ownership for the learning objectives, as well as the daily activities for the students is an essential piece for the curriculum in a student centered classroom. One of the most effective ways to create this is by having the students be active participants in the curricular process.
