21st Century Skills
Creating students that are ready for the 21st Century is the task that schools are given. This is hard to define since we don’t know exactly what will come in the next 100 years. The student centered classroom is a philosophy which lends itself well to preparing those in our schools to be productive and knowledgeable members of society. Students will have to be able to problem solve and adjust to a number of situations. Putting the learner at the center of decision making processes will help them practice decision making skills. Being able to work with others and help others grow is also an important skill that is encouraged in a student centered classroom. Being given a set task and then freedom inside of that task will help students learn to plan their time wisely and adjust accordingly when things don’t go as planned. Another important piece that some student centered schools are able provide is access to technology so learners can be digitally literate as they enter the workforce. 21st century skill are important and fit hand in hand in a number of ways with the student centered classroom.
